1920's Hand Engraved Brass Chinese Dragon Night Shining Pearl Urn with Floral and Rooster Motif / Ceremony / Full Moon / Oriental Decor

$399.99

So much detail, history, and lore that this stunning brass urn possesses! On the neck of this weighty, solid brass work of art you'll see a very intricately engraved 3D dragon chasing what legends call: "The Night Shining Pearl" engulfed in flames.

The Pearl is very symbolic in Asian folklore. Both Taoism and Buddhism use pearls as symbols of wisdom or enlightenment. Buddhism particularly depicts the pearl in the center of a lotus blossom as the ultimate wisdom in life. Since dragons were believed to be supernaturally wise, perhaps it is only natural that they should seek or hold such a treasure.

In addition, pearls resemble the round, white form of the full moon. Many legends state that dragons and other spirits of the sea preferred pearls over all other treasure. Dragons, being associated with rain and the seas, easily fell into this category.

The pearl is associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power, immortality, thunder, or as previously mentioned, the moon.

On to the engraving on the body of the urn, you'll see extremely detailed patterned rings around the widest part of the piece, and in triangle formations throughout the etched scenery. Below that, you'll find an image of a warrior riding a horse toward a pair of doors, and two mirrored images of roosters surrounded by flowers and leaves.

On the bottom of the urn you'll find a maker's mark.

Take a very close look at the photos - there are variations of urns with much more primitive dragon/pearl imagery, and none of them have the level of detail in engraving as this unique piece does. It takes time to absorb sheer artistry and care that went into the production of this vase. To say it would be a conversation piece in your home would be an understatement!
